For Indians and millions across the globe Switzerland is the dream vacation destination. As an Indian, I grew up watching many of the Bollywood movies shot in beautiful Swiss Alps. Indian cinema’s evergreen hero Dev Anand’s song “Phoolon Ke Rang Se” was my 1st introduction to this paradise on earth. There was one more big occasion for me and my wife; which is 9th marriage anniversary. We decided to do 10 days long trip in this country. Below are the learnings, findings & tips which will help you in optimizing itinerary.
What to do, how to plan, where to start ?
We started with clean slate almost 2 months before trip date, with just one info that Swiss is super costly. Googling has shown thousands of options to explore, to-do in Swiss and looking at tripadvisor has added to our confusion.
One thing was confirmed that we wanted to do all the panoramic trains in Swiss. ( Apologies for using word Swiss instead of Switzerland; as it’s actually currency name and not country name but with Indians; Swiss word is everything chocolate, country, currency, bollywood songs shot in majestic landscape )
As our entry and exit point was Zürich, we started planning itinerary accordingly. As train journey was on main focus, we found the link about grand train tour of Switzerland & from there our itinerary planning had started. Also thanks to active members on tripadvisor; we started getting good pointers ( but you need to be patient to go through hundreds of posts to fetch necessary info ). 2 prominent places stood out namely Luzern and Interlaken.
Next question was how many days to spend at each place, again we took help from tripadvisor forums posts and decided 2 days in Luzern, 4 days in Interlaken, remaining 4 days for Panoramic trains journey.
We’ve observed that majority of tourists do nature related activities like mountain, forest hiking, biking, lake ride and other sports like paragliding etc hardly anyone wastes time in visiting town or cities. We decided to do more nature seeing activities as well.

Panoramic Trains
Not to be missed are Glacier Express, Bernina Express
1) Glacier Express – https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowUserReviews-g188077-d198989-r480298334-Glacier_Express-Swiss_Alps.html
2) Bernina Express – https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowUserReviews-g188077-d609559-r480437887-Bernina_Express-Swiss_Alps.html
3) If you’ve more time do GoldenPass Line, Voralpen Express
( Please mark tripadvisor posts as helpful if you like it )
Tip:
Except Glacier & Bernina express, other trains you can get down at any random station to take best shots of sweet alpine villages, old style bungalows, cows, green and snow clad mountains.
During GoldenPass Line train tour, we could visit a typical swiss farm. There we met a farmer who gave tons of info about alps farming, cows going to alps in summer months, significance of different sizes of cow bells, organic farming importance, affect of global warming during winter, how he is much happier there and wants young generation to stay close to nature etc.
Mountains
Swiss has got plenty of must see mountains but you should only visit if there is Blue sky. Otherwise you end up wasting time and money.
We met an Indian family who went to Jungfraunjoch even when there was heavy snow and fog. You can’t enjoy majestic views from top of mountain if weather is bad. No point going on top even though it’s popular & everyone suggest to do.
During our 10 days of stay, we also had 2 days of bad weather. We had experienced bad weather during Mt. Rigi and partial good weather during Mt. Pilatus visits.

Lake Tour
Our recommendation is that lake tour is must to-do, get down in between villages to take picture, enjoy nature or take cable car in that particular stop.
Lake tour is preferable to be done when weather is good but also when there is bad weather ( like we had for couple of days ) jump onto a boat and enjoy scenic blue water journey, alps mountains, swiss houses.

Tip:
- From above info you can notice Interlaken has got more options to explore and enjoy nature if you make it as base.
- Either do Interlaken or Luzern as base and explore nearby regions. Otherwise you end up in train journey in between these 2 cities, which is almost 2 hrs one way.
Useful Links:
- Swiss Travel Pass ( https://www.swiss-pass.ch/ )
– STP is best option if you’ve planned lots of train journey and region exploration.
– It will save money for sure. You need to do per day travel cost calculation and find out how many days STP you want to buy.
– e.g. In our case it was 10 days tour, we bought 15 days STP. We used it extensively for Panoramic trains, boat tours, mountain, multiple journeys, open air museum visit

Tips:
1. Do not waste time in cities, they look same like any other European city.
2. As you’ve spent lots of money to visit Swiss, do as much nature exploration tours as possible
3. If you’re on budget or short of time don’t waste time going to restaurant. Buy nice & fresh fruits, sandwiches, other healthy snack items from super market like Coop. This has saved lots of money & time for us.
4. Refill water from fountains
5. Keep alternate plans ready for bad weather day if any
6. Check google map for cheaper hostels which are not listed with booking.com
7. Last couple of tips, choosing places to visit in Swiss is like going to a chocolate shop or toy shop for a kid. You will surely get lost & super confused.
8. From our experience we would suggest to visit central swiss than French or Italian speaking southern part ( except for Glacier, Bernina Express tours ) which is less beautiful compared to Luzern and Interlaken regions. Landscape is simply awesome & breathtaking in central and northern part.
Hi Vikram, I found your blog via the forum in myswissalps when I have difficulties to book the Gotthard Panorama Express. After reading your comment, I’ll give up to book it and I’m trying to think about if I should book Glacier Express or other trains. Thanks for all the tips & sharing, its so informative that helped me a lot to plan my coming Swiz trip 🙂

Hey Sally,
Thanks for your comment and appreciation.
I would recommend NOT to do Gotthard Panorama train but instead do either of Golden Line Pass ( all 3 trains ) , Voralpen Express, Glacier or Bernina.
If you can tell me your base city/place and how much time you’ve; based on that I can recommend one of these trains.
Enjoy your upcoming trip.
Regards,
Vikram

Hi Sally,
Your itinerary looks amazing. We have few suggestions though as below
– Skip city visit ( Zurich, Luzern ) these are just like any other city in Europe. Nothing special to see, but if you really want to see then spend 1/2 day for zurich on the day of arrival. Luzern can definitely be skipped.
– Do Golden Pass Line trains
– Mt. Rigi can be combined with Mt. Pilatus ( start the day early to cover both leisurely )
– Keep backup plans for each day ready in case of bad weather and do mountain visit only when sky is blue. You seems to be mountain fan as I see many of them 🙂

Anna, Vicky

HI Vikram
Found your link on myswissalps.
Did you guys go without children?
My wife has an official thing on 22nd June in Zurich, so we are travelling to Zurich on 20th June (will reach by 3 pm) and coming back from the same on 28th June.
The problem is that we are travelling with our 11 month infant, hence worried about very cold places.
Reading your blog was great, as it seems you did more of easy site seeing rather than mountain excursions.
We haven’t yet booked our hotels, (I know we are very late, especially in the holiday season).
Can you please suggest a 7 day itinerary to visit Switzerland?
Will be very grateful!

Hey Ramit,
Yes for now our journey was without kids 🙂
As weather is getting better; don’t worry about coldness with you young kid. We’ve met an Indian couple with 6 month old kid at Mt. Rigi but they had proper clothes against spring weather ( that day it was quite cold on top towards evening ).
I suggest you re-read my blog ( discuss with your wife ) and come up with your own itinerary and post here.
I can review and comment on it. Just like one of the user ( Sally ) has done.

Vikram

Hey
We will be visiting Switzerland between 20th-29th June 2017.
As we are travelling with a 11 month infant, making an itinerary was a little difficult, as we are unaware of the weather conditions in Switzerland. As you advised, after a little homework, I have a rough Itinerary. Kindly opine if this is fine for a relatively relaxed tour with a child. Can we add something/ should we delete anything listed (for the fear of being risky for an infant?)
The itinerary is as follows:
Day 1 : Arrive in Zurich : 1230 hrs
After checking in, explore nearby areas, visit supermarket and store some food, Late evening : Are there any night boat trips/ city tours?
Day 2 : Visit Rhine Falls
Day 3 : Busy till 3 PM (Going to Zurich for some work), Evening in Zurich : Is a city tour feasible?
Day 4 : In Zurich till 12 PM, Reach Lucerne – Check in 3 PM,Visit Lucerne Chapel Bridge/ Inseli Park/ Jesuit Church/ Lion Monument
Day 5 : Trip to Rigi
Day 6 : Take golden pass route to Interlaken via the Brunig Pass, proceed to Lauterbrunnen (What can we do in Lauterbrunnen? Can we visit Schilthorn?) –Return back to Lucerne
Day 7 : Lake Lucerne/ City tour
Day 8 : Mount Pilatus – The weather forcast ( 27Th June 2017 ) says sunny with scattered thunderstorms.. Will the weather be too Harsh?
Day 9 : Return back to Zurich from where fly back home
We plan to buy a 8-day Swiss travel pass to travel on trains/boats.
We are a couple in 30s and an infant aged 11 months. Our interests would be site seeing (should it be more inside the train or outside?) and farm/ boat tours.
Thanks
Ramit

Hi vikram
Do you think it’s worth it to do the gotthard panaromic express or just do the regional train? We have one day august 8 to get from Lugano to Zurich. I had planned to take the gotthard to lucerne and then regional train to Zurich. We have an overnight train booked out of Zurich that night into Germany. I appreciate your thoughts.
Thanks

Hi Daljit,
I highly recommend to do “Golden Pass Line” panoramic trains on that day, don’t waste time & money in Gotthard Panaromic train.
You can take high speed Gotthard tunnel train ( not the panaromic but normal one ) and then get connected with Golden Pass Line
You can check detailed reviews from my side on both trains. ( don’t forget to give thumbs up if you like the review 🙂 )
If you have STP this will be much easier to plan.

Vikrma

We don’t have the STP. Not sure if that makes a difference

Having STP is more convenient, economical & adds flexibility of train travel within Switzerland from our experiences.

Thanks for this beautiful write up which is very useful. Would you suggest how can i buy STP. For Golden pass train STP will work or we need to buy separate ticket for that. I am planning to fly from ABU DHABI to Zurich in June. We will also be with our 4.5 year old kid.
-Do you think that in 12 days i can add France also or should i plan just 10 Days for Switzerland alone.
-We are vegetarian so can you suggest a base where we can get Veg Indian food.
-Very Important ,If i can make my base Lucern and Interlaken and move using this STP from these places?
Best Regards

Hey Anup, most of your questions are answered in the blog itself 🙂 I would suggest re-read carefully again.
– STP can be bought from any of the sbb offices on all the stations.
– Do not eat at Indian restaurants in Swiss, as the food there is expensive not fresh. Instead buy fruits, salads, fresh sandwitches from super markets.
– It’s upto your family to decide if you want to enjoy Swiss fully or combine France as well.
Enjoy the trip

1. Pls suggest how logical above is and better alternatives.
2. Out of 14 day , 5 day in Paris and 9 day in Swiss is nearly confirmed and agreed by all family members (wife and 10 yr old daughter).
3. Cheapest possible way to spend for night stay at locations.
4. Some extra bucks spent is okay on 1 proper dinner (meal) with heavy breakfast in morning (complimentary with hotel) and nominal snacks during day time while touring. (Doesn’t like your idea of supermarket sandwich based meal)
Pls revert with your valuable experience.
